Crows are a part of many legends and stories in traditional Nepali folklore. In Hindu myth, they are the animae messengers of Yama, god of death. They are used in death and mourning rites as well, because crows help to carry the soul of the deceased afterlife so their role is considered an important one. People thank the birds on Kaag tihar and respect their role in life and death.

It is celebrated on the second day of Tihar, which generally falls either in October or November according to Christian Calendar.
